Bolt-tensioning is a technique to reach high and precise tension forces into long studs or bolts. This method is used mostly when residual tensions don’t exceed 80% of the yield point,  when galling may occur, when stud's torsion is possible, when studs are not too short, when loading factor is important. The tensioning unit  is expressed in kN (kilo-Newton) or psi or Ksi (1000 x psi) . (psi = pound per square inch)

To transfer loading forces into studs or bolts ( hundreds of tons per element), hydraulic tensioners and hydraulic nuts are the two most classic methods, using hydraulic pressure.
